The growing preference by planning authorities to retain existing concrete buildings with their embodied carbon rather than demolishing them, increasingly creates challenges for Project Design Teams. One of the main challenges, whether it be an imposing Seifert designed Brutalist structure or a more modest office block, is the establishment of the Inherent Fire Resistance of the existing structure. Often when these structures are being refurbished and there is a change in height, due to additional floors or a Change of Use the fire resistance needs to be upgraded. The various types of construction utilised throughout the Twentieth Century only serve to add an additional layer of complexity in determining a structures resistance to fire.

Aithon SFS offer a fire engineering design service for concrete structures which consists of an assessment of the exposure, an estimation of the temperature distribution within the member and a calculation of the resistance of the member subject to the design fire exposure. When a deficit in cover has been identified a bespoke Aithon coating solution will be designed to upgrade the structure to the required level.
